Caddo Parish is under a state of emergency today after a night of overwhelming rain that has flooded more than 100 homes and has major waterways in danger of flooding as rain continues to fall.
City of Shreveport officials were particularly worried about Cross Lake, which was less than an inch from flood stage this morning and was expect to go over flood stage by mid-afternoon. The lake is expected to crest at one foot over flood stage on Wednesday.
There was already flooding in the Wallace Lake Road area in south Caddo Parish, law enforcement said. Wallace Lake is expected to crest at a foot above flood stage late Thursday.
Nearly 11 inches of rain have fallen since Wednesday night, with a band of heavy rain expected early this afternoon.
Between 90 and 100 homes in Shreveport had water in them at one point. Late this morning, the areas of concern were in south Caddo Parish and northern DeSoto Parish. People were being evacuated by boats in the Kingston Road and Riding Club areas.
The city's drainage system is carrying water away but it was simply inundated by the amount of rain, said city Director of Operational Services director Mike Strong. Many ditches looked like river rapids
The record for rainfall in a 24-hour period was 12.44 inches set in 1933.
