The squeaky wheels at the shelters got the attention

There have been well-publicized complaints of inadequate facilities at state-run shelters in Shreveport, but other South Louisiana evacuees want to set the record straight about how they've been treated.

Several evacuees at Hirsch Coliseum said they have nothing but compliments for the staff and volunteers who have been helping them for nearly a week. They were brought to Shreveport on buses and are provided cots to sleep on and free food. They are bused to showers.

From the area set up for people's pets to the diapers and bottles provided for babies, the more subdued non-gripers say they've been treated well.

"They gave us everything we needed," said Barbara Matthews of Lake Charles. "They gave us shelter and, I mean, it was great."

"I thank God for places like shelters that will take you in and help you and the volunteers and the Red Cross. And the chaplains that pray for you," said evacuee Yvonne Lacto of Sulphur.
