A five-hour standoff at an unoccupied child care center in western Shreveport ended early today when police stormed the building and found no one inside.

The incident began about 12:30 a.m. at Rachel's Learn and Play on Broadway Avenue. A man called 911 to say he had broken into the building and was going to burn it, police said.

"He said he has a gun and we need to come get him," Sgt. Jim Taliaferro said.

Police brought in a special-response team and blocked off a two-block area around the building, which is located in a mostly residential area. They tried unsuccessfully to make contact with someone inside.

Officers fired tear gas into the building about 4 a.m. No one came out and police made forced entry to the building about an hour later. No one was inside, Taliaferro said.

Police were investigating this morning to attempt to find out who made the initial call.
