Shelters start opening tonight

A Red Cross shelter for Hurricane Gustav evacuees opens at 6 p.m. today at LSU-Shreveport's health and physical education building off Youree Drive in south Shreveport.

The state shelter at Hirsch Coliseum in Shreveport opens Saturday morning, officials said. A shelter at the old Sam's Club on Jewella Avenue opened this afternoon and will accept evacuees from St. Bernard Parish.

A shelter for people with medical problems opens this evening at Bossier City's Civic Center.

Southern University in Shreveport’s PE Building, 3050 Martin Luther King Drive, will open at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Three shelters in Ruston -- the Ruston Civic Center, 401 N. Trenton; Trinity United Methodist Church, 1000 Woodward Avenue; and Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1200 Farmerville Highway -- will open at noon on Saturday.

The Red Cross will open an evacuee shelter at Northwestern State University's PE Majors Building at noon on Saturday.
