Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal has ordered public schools in 30 parishes -- including all in Northwest Louisiana -- closed through Wednesday because of approaching Hurricane Gustav.

There is a public safety issue, and school buildings and buses could also be needed for evacuees, Jindal said.

Schools will be closed in Northwest Louisiana include: Caddo, Bossier, Bienville, Claiborne, DeSoto, Webster, Lincoln, Natchitoches, Red River and Sabine Parishes.

Other school districts that will not hold classes Tuesday and Wednesday are Avoyelles, Caldwell, Catahoula, Concordia, East Baton Rouge, East Carroll, Franklin, Grant, Jackson, LaSalle, Madison, Morehouse, Ouachita, Rapides, Richland, Tensas, Union, Vernon, West Carroll, and Winn.

Most of the school systems were not holding classes on Monday because of Labor Day.

Coastal parishes have been ordered evacuated.
