Shreveport police said today they interrupted a sexual assault in progress over the weekend.

Police were called to the Portland Street bridge about 1:30 a.m. Saturday to a report of a rape in progress.

Officers said they arrived to find a man on top of a woman. Both were naked from the waist down, police said.

Reginald Sabbath, 50, was arrested. The woman was described as "unresponsive and incoherent" and both appeared to be drunk, police said.

The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment of bruises and scratches. Sabbath was arrested for sexual battery, obscenity and public drunkenness.
