The sweltering heat has Texarkana officials looking for ways to keep residents safe. If necessary, emergency officials will use the southwest center on the Texas-side or the neighborhood center on the Arkansas-side as cooling stations for the elderly. Emergency Management Director Dave Hall says they'll only open the stations if they see a pattern of heat stress or an extended period of extreme heat. Hall says the city could also transport the elderly to the cooling stations by bus.
