Over million people receives food stamps during hurricane Ike & Gustav

The Department of Social Services today released final figures for the Disaster Food Stamp Program which ended last week.

During the more than three week period 609,595 households were approved for DFSP benefits. That represents 1,531,738 people who received $208,474,969 in benefits as a result of hurricanes Gustav and Ike.

Benefits were denied to 38,475 applicants.

Gustav Totals: 604,235 households have received benefits representing 1,527,738 persons in the amount of 206,591,465. Benefits have been denied to 38,458 households.

Ike Totals: 1,713 households representing 4,246 persons have received benefits in the amount of $600,848. Benefits have been denied to 16 households.

Louisiana has also processed 3,647 Texas households and issued $1,282,656 in disaster food stamp benefits to those families who evacuated to Louisiana due to Hurricane Ike.
