Two men killed late Wednesday night in a pickup crash in western Caddo Parish have been identified as the driver, Melvin J. LaBelle, 48, and his passenger, Shawn Pierce, 42, both of Iron Street in Caddo Parish.

Sheriff's deputies said it appears alcohol and excessive speed were factors in the crash, which happened at the intersection of South Lakeshore Drive and Louisiana 169.

The wreck was discovered about 11:30 p.m. at the "T" intersection where South Lakeshore runs into Highway 169.

Deputies said the truck, which was on South Lakeshore, apparently went through the intersection at a high rate of speed, went airborne across a steep ditch and then ran into the woods. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

"There are several open containers (of beer) Inside the vehicle," Deputy Mike Vaitkus said.

Neither man was wearing a seat belt.

Deputies said they don't know when the wreck happened. It was discovered after the Sheriff's Department got a call of a Chevy truck in the woods with its emergency flashers on.
