A young man who skipped school to commit a robbery was convicted today of killing a senior citizen who fought back that day.
Randy Marshall, 20, of Shreveport was found guilty of second-degree murder by Caddo District Judge Leon Emanuel. Marshall had opted for a trial before a judge instead of a jury. Marshall faces mandatory life in prison without parole.
Marshall was a 17-year-old student at Fair Park High School at the time of the April 2005 slaying. He and another teen skipped school and went to a Hollywood Avenue tire shop, where they stormed into the business and robbed a group of men who were playing dominoes, prosecutors said.
One of the men, 77-year-old Charlie Lewis, stabbed one of the robbers in the ankle as they were leaving. He was shot five times by Marshall, Assistant District Attorney Dhu Thompson said.
Co-defendant Cordero Campbell pleaded guilty to armed robbery and got a 20-year prison sentence in return for his testimony against Marshall.
Detective Rod Demery said the robbers had gone to the tire store believing those at the domino game had more money than they actually had.
