A new Louisiana law takes affect soon. It was sparked by a strange case of prison penpals.

Last summer a prisoner at Forcht Wade Correctional Center in Caddo Parish began sending racy letters to his 14 year old daughter.

Caddo Assistant D.A. Hugo Holland says, "He was having sex talk with his own daughter who lived out of state. He was making plans to get together with her sexually as soon as he got out and having her describe her sexual experiences." Holland says the pair sent dozens of letters back and forth for about six months. In one letter the teen writes, "I'll be legal by the time you get out."

Prison officials became suspicious after they noticed an image of a naked fairy the girl had drawn and sent to her her father. That's when they went through his cell.

The inmate couldn't be prosecuted. Holland says what happened wasn't illegal, "It was illegal to type these lewd chats to a child and send them on the internet, but it's not illegal to use the u.s mail to do it or do it in person."

But the incident was the motivation for a new state law which will expand the current state law.

Holland says, "Current law prevents lewd sexual act between child and adult only if it's electronic. Now it's any communication that's lewd."

The new law won't take affect until August 15th.
