Jefferson, Texas, officials have targeted approximately 40 run-down houses around the city for demolition.

The owners of the substandard property have been given six months to either make improvements to the houses or demolish them.

If the property owners don't comply, the city plans to tear them down, City Manager Jim Gibson said.

Jefferson will apply for a federal grant to pay for the demolitions, Gibson said.

Because of the time involved in obtaining a grant, it could take two or three years to complete, Gibson said.

A large part of Jefferson's economy is tied to tourism. Visitors are drawn to its historic architecture, shops and bed and breakfasts.
