There's now even more room at the inn. State authorities have just unlocked the doors to the area's newest hurricane shelter.
It may not look like much now, but the giant warehouse west of Shreveport could soon be housing up to 2,000 hurricane evacuees. The state plans to start converting the place next week.
Sandy Davis with the local office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness says the former GM supplier warehouse will serve as a critical transportation needs shelter. It will operate just like the shelter at 8810 Jewella. The new shelter will however replace the shelter at the old Outlet Mall on Greenwood Road. Instead of housing evacuees, it will house workers and volunteers.
The building has more than 100,000 square feet, 20,000 is office space and classrooms. The other 80,000 is warehouse space. The facility already has two very large locker rooms with several showers.
