Hurricane damage delays congressional elections

Saturday's party primaries in the 4th Congressional District election, along with three other congressional elections, will be delayed due to destruction around the state from Hurricane Gustav.

The amount of damage, including property destruction and widespread power outages, would make it too difficult to hold elections, said Secretary of State Jay Dardenne. Poll workers would just be coming home.

Dardenne made his recommendation to Gov. Bobby Jindal, who agreed with Dardenne's recommendation.

Dardenne said he won't decide when to hold the elections until he has a chance to survey each district.

In addition to the 4th Congressional District race in Northwest Louisiana, three other congressional races would be affected: the 1st District in suburban New Orleans, 2nd District in New Orleans and 5th District in northeast Louisiana.

The 4th Congressional District election is a hotly contested race. U.S. Rep. Jim McCrery is leaving Congress after 20 years.
