Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Gustav has again strengthened into a hurricane.
Its current path would have it making landfall on the Louisiana Gulf Coast early Tuesday. Forecasters caution that a storm's exact track and strength are difficult to predict days in advance.
The ArkLaTex will feel the remnants of Gustav if it hits the western part of the state, forecasters said, bringing heavy rains to the area.
Caddo Parish government said today it will provide sandbags at its facilities in Springridge, Vivian and Shreveport. Residents will have to fill the sandbags themselves. Those sites are 11929 Greenwood-Springridge Road, Finley Drive in Vivian and Monty Street in the Agurs part of Shreveport.
Gustav at midafternoon was a Category 1 hurricane with top sustained winds around 75 mph.
Gulf Coast states are watching the storm carefully. Mississippi is telling coastal residents hit by Hurricane Katrina three years ago to evacuate this weekend, and residents in parts of Louisiana south of Interstate 10 are under voluntary evacuation orders.
