In a plea agreement that allowed him to avoid a possible death sentence, one of two men accused of the random kidnapping and murder of a woman here pleaded guilty today to second-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Dwight Bacon, 25, of Shreveport pleaded guilty in Caddo District Court to the April 2005 murder of Tosha Lampkin of Houston.

Lampkin, 30, was in town for a family get-together when she was abducted. Prosecutors believe Lampkin was selected because she was spotted driving alone.

Prosecutors said Lampkin was followed and abducted at gunpoint as she got out of her car at the David Motel in Bossier City. She was then driven to Kuhn Road in Caddo Parish, murdered and her Toyota Tercel set on fire. Caddo sheriff's investigators believe the motive for the kidnapping was robbery.

Bacon's one-time co-defendant, Brandon Davis, was convicted in Caddo District Court last year of first-degree murder. The jury deadlocked over whether he should get a death sentence or life in prison so he is serving a life term.
