A Shreveport man, upset at his girlfriend because she had been out all night, squeezed their 3-month-old baby to death in a fit of anger, the Caddo Parish grand jury concluded today as it returned a second-degree murder indictment against him.
Grady Thornton, who turns 19 on Saturday, faces life in prison if convicted of killing his son, T.J.
Shreveport police, who arrested Thornton in June, said he was fussing at his girlfriend and the baby started crying. Thornton vented his anger by squeezing T.J., police said.
The baby died of blunt force trauma to the head and torso, Assistant District Attorney Ed Blewer said. There was no indication he fell, Blewer said.
Thornton is jailed under $500,000 bond.
The grand jury was scheduled to hear the identity theft case against well-known Shreveport criminal defense lawyer Daryl Gold, who is accused of using his ex-wife's name and Social Security number to obtain a large line of credit, but the attorney general's office postponed presenting the case.
Gold categorically denies the accusations, saying they are the result of an overzealous Sheriff's Department and a bitter ex-wife involved in a contentious child-custody case.
The grand jury returned indictments in two other cases:
-- Two more people were charged with involvement in the murder of a pawn shop employee who was killed during a robbery attempt last month.
Accused shooter Tarsa Cooley, 21, of Shreveport, and Jarred Hullaby, 30, both of Shreveport, were indicted for the murder of Matthew Robert, an employee at Max's Pawn Shop on Linwood Avenue. Cooley was charged with first-degree murder; Hullaby was charged with second-degree murder.
Last month, Tiray Edwards, 15, was indicted for first-degree murder and will be tried as an adult.
Prosecutors said they plan to seek the death penalty for Cooley, who they say shot Robert without provocation.
Arraignment of all three defendants is pending in Caddo District Court.
-- Lavoni Bayone, 62, of Shreveport was charged with second-degree murder of her husband, Peter. He was shot five times in the head as he took a bath. The shooting happened hours after Mrs. Bayone had been released from a psychiatric facility.
