New Orleans' mayor lifted checkpoints into that city at 9 a.m. today, the latest of the parishes in coastal Louisiana to start letting evacuated residents return home.
Louisiana State Police spokesman Doug Pierrelee said Terrebonne Parish still has too much damage for residents to return home, but they can at least head closer to home and take shelter in neighboring parishes.
Each parish will determine when to allow residents to return home, Gov. Bobby Jindal said.
Authorities this morning were making arrangements to start busing some of the evacuees in shelters in Shreveport-Bossier back to South Louisiana.
Trees are still blocking roads and power lines are still down in Terrebonne Parish.
Pierrelee said most parishes were able to clean up streets quickly because so many people evacuated. Emergency workers were able to focus immediately on cleanup and not search and rescue, he said.
Shelters in South Louisiana are open for people who may not have power restored for weeks. Shelters in Northwest Louisiana will remain open as long as they are needed, but evacuees are free to return home.
