A one-year-old boy was killed early Saturday when a gunman riddled a house in Shreveport’s Queensborough neighborhood with bullets.

The infant died as he slept in his playpen, family members said.

A suspect in the case surrendered to the city marshal Saturday night and was turned over to police. City Marshal Charlie Caldwell identified the suspect as 17-year-old Darius Williams of Shreveport.

Police were not disclosing what they believe led to the shooting or who was the intended target.

The shooting happened shortly after 4 a.m. at a house in the 3100 block of Lillian Street.

The back of the house was hit by approximately 18 bullets. The child, who had just turned one, was asleep in his playpen in a front room of the house when he was killed, family members said.

"This is an innocent child. It's senseless, said Judith Cole, the little boy's aunt.

Family members said the child's mother had to be taken to the hospital after she fainted.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 673-7373.
