A 4-year-old was killed in Red River Parish Tuesday evening when a family member accidentally shot him with a high-powered rifle, the sheriff said. The gun accidentally discharged when it bumped against a wall.
The tragedy happened shortly before 6 p.m. on U.S. 71 in the Crossroads community north of Coushatta. Killed was Ethan Jones, a preschooler at Red River Elementary.
Red River Sheriff Johnny Ray Norman said the victim was shot by his 12-year-old uncle as he watched cartoons at his great-grandmother's house.
The older boy had been deer hunting. He thought he might have shot a deer and went to the family house to get someone to help him track it, Norman said. The rifle discharged when it was bumped against a wall.
