One of the best rewards for doctors and nurses is seeing their smallest patients grow up healthy.
On Sunday, more than 100 children took part in a reunion at CHRISTUS Schumpert. The children were all once patients in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Every year, some return for a Christmas reunion.
Katherine Carmody has two sets of twins. She says about five years ago, she had her first set of twins; a girl and a boy. The little boy wound up in NICU. Then about five months ago she had her second set of twins; another little girl and boy. This time the little girl was a patient in NICU.
Carmody says she wouldn't miss one of the Christmas reunions because the doctors and nurses are "just so excited to see how big the kids are and just so healthy, because they tell you from the start 'you're not even going to know your kids were in NICU.' And you can't tell."
Now all the Carmody children are doing great.
