LITTLE ROCK (AP) -- A new report says a severe flu pandemic could cause a loss of five (b) billion dollars in Arkansas -- equal to five-point-eight percent of the state's economy.

The percentage loss to Arkansas' gross domestic product is the 13th highest of all 50 states. The report was issued today by Trust for America's Health.

Nationally, a pandemic flu outbreak could cause a $683 billion loss.

The report says states with high levels of tourism and entertainment could be affected the most. Nevada could see the biggest decline, followed by Hawaii.

The study examined an outbreak as severe as the 1918 pandemic, which in modern terms could lead to 90 million sick Americans and 2.2 million deaths.

The report projected such an outbreak would kill 22,000 Arkansans and sicken 823,000. That's 30% of the state's population.
