If you're planning a cook out, you might want to check your freezer first. A beef recall has greatly expanded to include 5.7 million pounds of fresh and frozen meat which may be contaminated with E. Coli.
The "suspect beef" processed by United Food Group is being recalled in a big way this weekend. The recall is based on what's being called "unspecified concerns" raised by the California State Department of Health Services. This coming on top of the recall going on right now with Tyson Fresh Meats out of Texas.
The double recall could effect BBQ's and other cooking plans if people are reaching into their freezers to grab frozen hamburger. The United Food Group recall involves fresh and frozen beef shipped to stores in 11 western states. There is a danger of E. Coli contamination.
The "sell-by" dates were marked April 6th-20th. So, the problem isn't stores selling consumers potentially contaminated meat right now, it's what might be in your freezer. So far, 14 cases of illnesses have been reported. There have been no deaths.
The second recall comes from Tyson Fresh Meats, which is sold *only* in Wal-Mart stores. The recall of more than 40,000 pounds of ground beef was sold in 12 states -- and was produced on June 2nd, with the "use or freeze by" date June 13th.
The Tyson labels to look for read: "Angus Steak Burger; All Natural", and "All Natural Ground Beef." The code number is "EST 244S."
The consumer hotline to call for United Food Group: 1-800-325-4164.
If you bought ground beef from Wal-Mart, the Tyson Consumer Hotline: 1-800-233-6332.
The Wal-Mart toll-free number: 1-800-925-6278.
The best piece of advice coming from the USDA Food safety department, is to check the dates on the frozen meat in your home. If you've got meat with those dates, throw it out, or take it back to the store.
